Kerry makes her debut with us this winter with a selection of five charming paintings from her latest Shetland series - two larger and three miniature views.
Each one presents a moment and a mood, with figures and buildings captured in a few clever brushstrokes that suggest movement, gestures and details.
Kerry is Scottish-born and fell in love with Shetland when she did a residency in Scalloway two years ago: "I'm inspired to paint the experience of being in wild and lonely places. I have a particular love of the Scottish Highlands and Islands and make regular trips North to feed my imagery and imagination."
We are also showing three other, more figurative works by Kerry to display her love of animal painting.
ABOUT KERRY PHIPPEN
Kerry Phippen was born in Perth, Scotland and has lived in Gloucestershire since 1999. Her home and studio are on the edge of the Slad valley near Stroud, surrounded by hillsides and horses.
She regularly revisits her Scottish roots for inspiration and has a particular affinity with the Scottish Highlands and Islands, including Mull, Skye and Shetland.
Walking and making observational drawings, she is always on the look-out for magic in the everyday and describes herself as ‘a bit of a stargazer and cloud watcher by nature’.Her paintings are often triggered by seeing a figure or animal in nature, offering a sense of scale or signs of life in otherwise very quiet spaces.
Kerry is a graduate of Bath Spa University with her work being exhibited in many National venues, including the Royal Scottish Academy, the Jerwood Drawing Prize and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. She is a regular exhibitor in the RWA Annual Exhibition in Bristol. Her ink drawing ‘Ghoul School’ is in the permanent collection of Prints and Drawings at The British Museum.
