Sue has been inspired by the revitalising and shaping of her new garden - and her relatively recent exploration of the countryside near her Cotswold home - to produce this series of flower and landscape-based semi-abstract pieces on a grand scale.

Each one has her typical exuberant and expressive energy, in colour palette and in brush marks - confident close-ups and laying down of pigments and layers to build up the image surface.

Rainbow colours are slightly muted to offer a joyous sense of long summer days, big blooms and colour-drenched vistas.

This trio of works would suit a contemporary scheme and inject positivity and vigour to reflect decor choices.

  • ABOUT SUE BOWN

Sue Bown is a painter and printmaker from the South Cotswolds and new to the gallery for winter 2024.

Her practice is an enquiry into movement and form. She uses gestural mark making and layering to take the viewer on an uplifting journey about space and place.

Colour, scale and materiality hold importance, as does the physicality of moving paint on a surface. In short, Sue regards the handling of materials as an energetic excitement, an expression of self.

She trained at Arts University Plymouth where she graduated in 2022 with a First Class Honours degree in Painting, Drawing and Printmaking.

It was there that she won the Pro Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence and was also shortlisted for the Platform Graduate Award.

Stephen Felmingham, Pro Vice Chancellor at Arts University Plymouth, said: "Sue’s paintings demonstrate a profound understanding of material, colour and form... Her paintings resonate deeply with the viewer and are a testament to the immense hard work she has put into her course."
