New horizons for one of our most popular landscape artists, Eleanor Campbell...

She has created this series of plein air minimalist landscapes, of the countryside near her North Cotswold home, to try out new techniques and materials plus celebrate the arrival of spring. They are part of our First Impressions series of entirely new work (in media, technique or topic) by some of our most popular artists.

Eleanor explains:

“I took my inspiration from the beautiful countryside of north Oxfordshire, with its rolling hills and distant views. I do love to see the silhouettes of trees on the horizon but, oh, the joy and freedom of drawing outside on the first dry days of 2026: it was fantastic!

“Some of my favourite things, in winter, are the cut Hawthorn hedges, with their skeletal shapes. They’re so graphic against the soft landscape and, with this weather, came some great clouds, passing within minutes and constantly changing. Every way I turned there was a great view.

“It’s the first time I’ve sketched outside with such a small variety of materials: charcoal, ink, graphite, one pen, one flat brush and a variety of oil pastels plus some clean ‘puddle’ water from the track where I positioned myself. I thought I’d limit myself to these few tools and materials.

“I think it’s important to make different marks with different tools and materials to keep interest flowing and, hopefully, create something that is pleasing to the eye."

  • ABOUT ELEANOR CAMPBELL

Having lived on the west coast of Scotland, with its rugged coastline, then moving to the rolling hills of the Cotswolds, Eleanor has enjoyed the best of both contrasting terrains as inspiration for her landscape painting.

Beyond landscape, Eleanor enjoys producing a variety of imaginative still life art which is often more graphic or realistic in style, using mixed media and painting from life whilst also exploring our material world through her semi-abstract approach.

Eleanor studied for her BA at Glasgow School of Art and, throughout her life, she has followed in the footsteps of her family as artists and creators. She pursued a career of graphic design and illustration and, later in life, returned to focus on her art. She has carried out numerous commissions and exhibits as a full-time painter in the Cotswolds, Cornwall and the Peak District.

She is based in Oxfordshire, in  the heart of the Cotswolds.
